Nim, Area Manager – South Region
What’s the purpose of your role?
It’s my responsibility to continually drive sales and profits across 25 stores. I also provide the support, coaching and development all the people I manage need to consistently improve their performance, and that of the business.
How do you think Blacks is changing?
There is a real commitment to providing career ladders for ambitious people throughout the business. The introduction of a Town Manager role means that successful Store Managers can progress into a role where they’re running several units. The business has also introduced a succession programme to help the most talented Area Managers progress to Regional Manager.
What do you enjoy most about working at Blacks?
Everyone is working towards the same goal. It’s really focused. I’ve worked in places where there’s a lot of hot air, but here, managers say what they mean and do what they say. The doors are always open for you to voice your opinions. I’ve been impressed by the way I have regular access to my Regional Director here. I really feel like I’m working with inspirational people, and I don’t say that lightly.
What qualities do you need to work at BLG as an Area Manager?
I think you’ve got to be a really hands-on person who can land on their feet and get stuck in right away. You’ve got to be self-motivated, driven and able to deliver results. If you are, there are big opportunities here.
